Notes and Responses from the Anniversary Celebration

THANK YOU'S

Geetha and I had a great time meeting with all the faculty and staff of UNH Electrical and Computer Engineering. We participated in all three events -- Cook out, Reception before banquet and Department Tour. I came to UNH 40 years ago, depending on the admission and assistantship offered by UNH ECE dept. As I explained to Professors Murdoch, Melvin and Kraft, the skills I developed in network theory and analysis helped me to solve many real life problems, ranging from calculating the voltage drop in an electrical distribution network to placing regenerators at the appropriate locations in the undersea optical network.
I thank the entire team for organizing this event and hope to see you all in the next event.

A big thank-you and word of appreciation for the very successful Anniversary Event last weekend. Please extend my thanks to all of those involved and I know there were many.

I enjoyed catching up with faculty friends, renewing acquaintances with former students and meeting some of your current ones. When you see John P., Tom, Andrzej, Glen, and Paul, tell them I missed seeing them.

Let's think of an excuse to have a celebration without waiting another 25 years!

FOND MEMORIES

Arun Ravindran (MS 1969)

I landed at Durham with a $50 - Traveler's check in 1967. UNH provided me a teaching assistantship of $2400 per year. That helped me to establish myself, get a high quality education and contribute globally to the communication industry. Thanks to Professors Murdoch and Melvin for offering me an opportunity to advance in life.

One of my most vivid memories of the EE department was when a group of students was getting ready to take a hybrid electric vehicle to the Urban Vehicle Design Competition in Detroit. As is typical we were madly working to finish our project and get the vehicle ready to load into a U-Haul truck to begin the trek to Detroit. Ron Clark, who was one of the advisors for the student project, poked his head into the lab late in the afternoon the day before we needed to leave to see how we we doing. He made the mistake of asking if there was anything he could help with. It must have been at least 3 AM before he finally went home after spending a good bit of time upside down under the dash soldering wires to the drive motor and internal combustion dc generator control systems. I can only imagine what dinner looked like when he got home.

Moving from the old Kingsbury to the new Kingsbury building was an interesting experience. You would not believe the stove we found in the old Kingsbury. Some stuff from the first world war.  It was interesting helping salvage the mural in the Kingsbury Library.
