Reading Assignments

Homework Assignments
Turn in homework assignments in Word document format. The document should be well formatted, mixing the graphs and explanations as requested in the assignment, with no handwritten or hand drawn items. Email the document to me at my UNH address. If applicable, include in your email all the Matlab, and/or other files (e.g. speech files), that I would need to recreate your results.

Assignments are due at class time on the due date. Late assignments will not be accepted.

  • HW 1, due February 15:
    • Textbook exercises: 3.17, 3.18, 3.19 (companion website is at http://authors.phptr.com/quatieri/).
    • Reproduce Figure 2 and 3 from Gordon E. Peterson, Harold L. Barney, "Control Methods Used in a Study of the Vowels." Record your own voice. You can use Praat or WaveSurfer to get formant frequencies. See my del.icio.us page for links to these tools. Extend your work with something that you think would be interesting to do. If you speak a language other than English, show formants for vowels in that language (it may and may not be practical to show them all). Another idea would be to find a way to represent the third formant in your plots.
  • HW 2, due February 29
    • Textbook exercises: 5.23, 5.24
  • HW 3, due March 14
    • Textbook exercise 6.21
  • HW 4 - attendance required on April 9
    • Attend Kevin Short's CEPS Lecture Series talk, 4-5 PM in Iddles L101 (arrive early for refreshments to be served at 3:30 PM).
  • HW 5, due May 12
    • Textbook exercises: 7.21, 7.23
