Carter Receives UNH Summer Faculty Fellowship

Dr. Michael J. Carter was awarded a UNH Summer Faculty Fellowship for the summer of 1995. These fellowships provide partial support for faculty members who are initiating research in a new area of interest. Dr. Carter is currently starting a new research program involving the neural network modeling of the pathogenesis of schizophrenia.

Forrest and Milani Receive NASA Fellowships

Glenn Forrest and Dino Milani, both ECE Department graduate students, received Space Grant Graduate Fellowships from the NASA sponsored New Hampshire Space Grant Consortium. These fellowships provide support for studies in diverse disciplines that use space technology and/or adopt a planetary view of the global environment that is consistent with NASA's "Mission to Planet Earth." Both students are involved in the EOS/ECE small satellite design project (CATSAT).

LaCourse Receives Patent

Dr. John R. LaCourse was named as a co-inventor (along with Dr. Paul Corcoran of Hancock, NH) in the US patent of an apparatus for the functional assessment of human activity. The apparatus consists of a body suit with embedded sensors and a recording device to monitor and record gross body movements for up to twenty-four hours. It is intended for use in rehabilitation programs where it will quantify the extent of mobility of individuals during work tasks, thus facilitating the selection of practical occupational alternatives.

LaCourse Chairs Ergonomics Workshop

In March, Dr. John R. LaCourse chaired the Sixth Annual Conference on Ergonomics, held at the New England Center on the UNH campus. This workshop brings together individuals from academia, health care providers and industry to discuss issues of research, practice and policy in the area of workplace ergonomics. This year the special focus of the workshop was on upper body cumulative trauma disorders.

Bernhard Receives Class of 1944 Professorship

Dr. Jennifer T. Bernhard was named as the 1995 recipient of the UNH Class of 1944 Professorship. This award provides professional development support to an outstanding new faculty member for a period of three years. Dr. Bernhard plans to carry out research in the electromagnetic aspects of wireless data communications as well as electromagnetics for other industrial and medical applications.

Miller Receives Outstanding Teacher Award

Dr. W. Thomas Miller received the 1994-95 Outstanding Teacher Award - Electrical Engineering. The New Hampshire Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi gives this award each year.

Miller Receives Excellence in Research Award

Dr. W. Thomas Miller was named as the 1995 recipient of the UNH Excellence in Research Award, which is intended to identify and honor a member of the faculty who has demonstrated superior creativity and success in research. Dr. Miller's work with machine learning in robotics has been sponsored over the past ten years by a combination of grants from industry, the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research and the Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Kraft Wins Best Paper Award

Dr. L. Gordon Kraft received the Best Paper in Session Award for his paper entitled "Stability Properties of CMAC Neural Networks," presented in June at the Automatic Control Conference (ACC) in Seattle, Washington.

Dziurla-Rucinska Chairs Microelectronics Workshop

In May, Dr. Barbara Dziurla-Rucinska chaired the Fourth Annual North Atlantic Test Workshop ATW'95, held at the New England Center at UNH. This workshop brings together individuals from the US and Europe who are involved in the design of microelectronic systems in academia, industry and government. This year the workshop focused on collaborative technology programs integrating the interests and activities of academia and industry. A companion workshop occurred in July in Corsica, France, chaired by Dr. Paul Bisgambiglia of the Universite de Corse. Both Dr. Barbara Dziurla-Rucinska and Dr. Andrzej Rucinski from the ECE Department at UNH attended.

Murdoch Chairs Illumination Society Workshop

Professor Murdoch chaired the 1995 Illumination Engineering Society of North America Summer Workshop for Teachers of Lighting, held in July at the New England Center at UNH. This two week workshop provides instruction in the basic skills of the art and science of lighting to teachers of interior design. The annual workshop, first held in 1984, now attracts participants worldwide. Professor Murdoch has retired from the full-time faculty but continues to make contributions to UNH and to our department in his role as Faculty Emeritus.
