Don Melvin Retires

Dr. Donald W. Melvin, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Physical Science and long time member of the Electrical Engineering Department, retired last fall after thirty-seven years of service to the University. During his tenure he served in a number of positions, including Associate Dean, Director of the College's Nashua Graduate Center, Head of the Engineering Technology Program, and Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Those of you who have been out of school for a while will remember Don as a teacher in electronics, electrical machines, information theory, and networks. Recent graduates will remember him as a 'force' to deal with in the Dean's office, especially if you had grade point problems. Professor Melvin was hired by Prof. Winn, who was chairman back then, and joined the Department in 1957 along with Al Frost and Ron Clark. Don and Ron were natives of New Hampshire and Al was from south of the border.

Don received his BS EE at UNH in 1955, his MS EE at Yale in 1957, and his PhD in EE at Syracuse University in 1971. His early work was in Active Network design and synthesis but he was always interested in student project activities. Don was responsible for the introduction of the Sea Grant funded ocean projects course during the mid-sixties and was instrumental in establishing the UNH Ocean Engineering program. He has been active in the NH Chapter of Professional Engineers, serving as its president in the early eighties, and has taught in the refresher courses on campus for many years. He also has been interested in forensic engineering and has served as an expert witness for many regional legal associations.

Prof. Melvin spent 41 years at UNH, including his years as an undergraduate, and will now have time to spend with his wife, Joan, and two young sons, Adam (11) and Patrick (8). Congratulations Mel and enjoy.
