Memories...
Eugene Awright (BS '43) is retired from the Wright-Malta Corp. in
Ballston Spa, NY. He has suggested that the class of '43 appropriate funds from
their 50th to establish an e-mail roster for alumni.
Sanford H. Cole, Jr. (BS '53) is a retired test officer for the US
Army Electronic Proving Ground. He is living in Sierra Vista, AZ and keeps busy
touring in his RV. He remains active in computer applications to amateur radio.
He says UNH made it possible to pursue a career in a variety of engineering
positions.
Bob Goodrich (BS '57), an ex-faculty member and student, has retired
from Northeast Utilities to Randolph, VT. Bob does some part time teaching at
Norwich University where he is working on an electric car.
William Dickinson (BS '60, MS '75) retired in March '94 after 33+
years with the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. Bill's
experience lies in the area of system engineering of data systems used for
Earth-orbiting manned and unmanned spacecraft communication, control and data
handling. He expects to be employed in similar work in industry before the end
of 1994. Bill has also been involved with NASA manned flight programs from
Mercury to Space Station, and with most spaceflight programs (unmanned, earth
orbiting) managed by GSFC. Bill would like to participate in (and has
volunteered to help establish, if necessary) a program in which UNH EE alumni
can be used as an educational resource via e-mail by UNH EE undergraduate and
graduate students.
Richard J. Ross (BS '66) is working as a Development Engineer/Manager
for IBM Microelectronics. Dick reports that his family, wife and three children
are well and happy. He also adds a few words of thanks, saying that much of what
he has been able to do in his career is due specifically to skills learned at
the knee of Don Melvin, Fletcher Blanchard, Fil Glanz, Ron Clark, Dick Jennings
and many others. Dick says that his UNH ECE Education has been invaluable adding
that, with the exception of his dad, the single key figure in his continuing and
pursuing an EE career was Professor Alden Winn. "I will be forever grateful for
his teaching, counsel and advice -- especially the truth that you can make a
system foolproof, but not damnfool - proof".
Peter Sacchetti (BS '73) is working as the Director in Product
Development for Elan Pharma in Smithfield, Rhode Island.
Bill Howdeshell (BS '80) stopped by in early October. He has returned
to New England from Japan with his wife and is living in the Hanover, NH area.
He has obtained an MBA and his experience is mostly in the management of
software businesses. He is currently looking for a company at which to apply his
skills.
Aaron Sakovich (BS '80) left Digital in May after 7 years as a
pre-sales technical consultant in order to start his own firm, Net Results. The
firm is based in Huntsville, AL and provides computer consulting services to
several firms of varying sizes. They will also shortly be offering commercial
Internet services and will be a Web provider for the business community in
Huntsville. The long term goal is to do software development on PDAs while
"letting Gulf surf tickle our toes". Time will tell. Aaron is remarried and has
one daughter, Deanna (3), and one son, Kevin (4 months). Congratulations! Aaron
also wonders where the David W. Drewn plaque for Ocean Engineering is located
now. For sentimentality's sake, he would like to find out if his name is still
on it for '79.
Lynn Monica (BS '81) After graduating from UNH with a BSEE in 1981,
Lynn took a job at Motorola in Schaumberg, Ill. She has 13 years experience in
engineering management and development of hardware and software of radio system
products. These include Console, Controller, and Radio System Management
products for local to wide area radio communication systems. She started with
Motorola as a hardware engineer, working in the design of analog and digital
technology. After 6 years of development, she moved into the management of
product development. She now manages 52 engineers in the US and Israel. Lynn has
been a member of several steering committees: one working to improve the work
environment for women, and another to improve the methods by which teams operate
and are managed, thereby enabling people to be more productive in their work.
She finds some time for sand volleyball and for creative activities in the arts
(dance and ceramics).
Susan R. Dubois (BS '81, MS '84) Sue graduated with her BSEE in 1981
and after working for a year came back to receive her MS from UNH in 1984. She
then spent a number of years at MIT working on a PhD in speech recognition. Her
husband, one of the original developers of the pre-commercial Connection
Machine, decided to go to law school in Chicago, where they have lived ever
since. Sue has had interest and worked in accounting and business and is now
pursuing an interest in cognitive science and psychology.
Laurence N. Bohs (BS '81), a former instructor as well as
student, reports that things are going well with him and his wife Libby, who is
training for a 100 mile bike race from Hickory, NC to the top of Grandfather
Mountain. He did it last year and says "it's quite a chugger". The Bohs took a
long trip this summer and bike toured from Portland, Oregon, across Idaho, and
into Salt Lake City, Utah.
Alan Fougere (BS '81) is president of Falmouth Scientific, Inc. in
Cataumet, MA, a company which he started. The head of manufacturing at Falmouth
Scientific is Gene Avery (BS '92) .
Paul M. Berard (BS '82) is a member of the technical staff at Reliance
Comm/Tech. He recently received his private pilot's license and is enjoying the
great Arizona flying weather. He thinks the senior project program is a great
idea, and a great way for students to "get their feet wet" and be better
prepared for the real world.
Frank Sullivan (BS '83) is currently working for Genus, a manufacturer
of Ion Implantation Equipment. His job centers around design and packaging of
Implanter Control Systems as well as System Integration. He mentions that
Marc Metrolis(BS '83) is presently living in Dallas and recently accepted
a job with SAIC, Inc. in Hanniford, WA.
Lee Beauregard (BS '84, MS '92) lives in Bedford, NH with his wife
Jean and is enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Biomedical Engineering at Boston
University. He is currently working on his doctoral research at MIT on Haptic
Perception in Virtual Environments. Leisure activities include camping and
hiking in the White Mountains and Maine.
David A. Bugbee (BS '84) is currently living with his wife Nancy in
Salem, MA. For the past three years he has worked on patient monitors (EKG
machines) at Siemens Medical Systems in Danvers, MA. He received an MSCS from
Boston University in 1989. David encourages all graduates (especially the class
of '84) to write and let the rest know what has become of you, both
professionally and personally. He would enjoy getting e-mail from fellow alumni
at dav@sme.siemens.com.
Kevin Major (BS '84, MS '92) is employed by AT&T and has helped
out his Alma Mater by facilitating the transfer of used, surplus equipment to
the ECE Department. Kevin is also a Captain (Captain Major) in the Army Reserves
and serves part time at UNH Army ROTC. Last fall, Kevin was primarily
responsible for the program for the Centennial Celebration of ROTC at UNH. Among
the speakers were UNH President Fairchild and NH Governor Merrill. Kevin enticed
many ROTC alumni to speak and share photos and experiences. Among them was Col.
Alden Winn, EE Professor Emeritus. Last October, Kevin was a local hero. On his
way to UNH at 7:30 am, he was first on the scene at a major auto accident on
Route 155A in Lee. The Durham Rescue Squad commended him for his prompt action
in helping the victims.
Carl Oppenheimer (BS '85) is working for Lam Research, Inc. and says
he is building $1.4 million toys. He thinks engineering requires constant
learning in technical areas, an ability to get along and organizational skills.
Ruth Kennett (MS '85) Ruth was in the AFIT (Air Force In Training)
program. She graduated with a BSEE in 1983 and received her MS from UNH in 1985.
She had been in the US Air Force since her undergraduate years, so after her MS
she served at various places in the US. She currently holds the rank of captain.
At some point she started her PhD at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and
received that degree this spring. This year she taught EE at the US Air Force
Academy and will continue teaching there. Ruth has two children and a second
husband. Did I mention that she served in the Middle East? She is looking
forward to having only two jobs, not three, now that she is done with her
doctorate!
David M. Drouin (BS '86, MS '88) is a staff Firmware Engineer for
Syquest Technology where he is responsible for electrical development on their
1.8" removable disk drive. He mentions that one of the most rewarding aspects of
his career is the continued learning after completion of formal schooling. Dave
was married to Cara Metheny on February 18, 1995.
