IEEE

by Kimberly Ann Roy, President

This year the UNH Student Chapter of IEEE began its first meeting with a bang! Over half of the freshmen class as well as over sixty other faculty and students attended. Freshmen met their "Big Brothers and Big Sisters" in a new program designed for freshmen to have an upperclassman, Big Brother/Sister, to answer any questions they may have and to learn about the projects and research that upperclassmen were involved in.

The year as a whole turned out to be a huge success. A fall picnic was held in the beginning of October behind Kingsbury Hall with an attendance of over fifty students, faculty and staff. There were over ten informative lectures including the following speakers: Dr. A. D. Frost, EE Graduate Student Presentations, Dr. J. Murdoch, Dr. P. Nahin, Dr. J. Bernhard, Dr. R. Clark, Dr. M. J. Carter, Dr. W. T. Miller, III, IOL Opportunities, Mark Furber, as well as John and Jenna Tousignant. The topics ranged from Dr. Nahin's new book, The Science of Radio, to John and Jenna's missionary work in Haiti!

The Annual Christmas Party was held, as always, in the basement dining room of the Tin Palace. Well over ninety students, faculty and staff packed into the dining room. Rumors say everyone bought tickets so the president would stop harassing them to do so. However, I am sure all attended for some great holiday fun - and of course, the "make-your-own-sundaes." The "international" team won Pictionary. But, witnesses say there was a lot of cheating going on!

The students skunked the faculty and staff in a friendly game of basketball! Although the faculty and staff showed an excellent performance, they just could not keep up to the manpower that the students had. Congratulations students!

Two pool tournaments and a golf tournament took place during the spring semester. Finally, the spring picnic was held during the last week of classes in Kingsbury Rm. 105 due to bad weather. At least one additional trip to the grocery store for much more food was necessary. The room was packed with well over one hundred faculty, staff, and students as well as Dean Torbert and the Dean's office staff who could smell the barbecue in their offices!

All in all, IEEE roused up a lot of spirit in both the students and the faculty this year! Everyone was very active and had LOTS of fun! Thanks to this year's officers.
