Memories ….
Editors Note: Last year Aaron Sakovich inquired about the David Drew plaque.
The plaque is displayed in the new ocean engineering building. It is interesting
that Aaron mentioned this plaque because Jason Gerry and James Inglee, both
students in our department, are this year's recipients of the David Drew
award.
Curt Helfrich (BS '81) stopped by the Department in July 1995. He is
currently a senior project engineer for the Bayer pharmaceutical division in
Clayton, NC. He enjoys the south and his work as well as his wife and two young
sons. Curt reminisced about the days of the primal scream contest on the parking
lot after final exams. He and Rod O'Reilley were primal instigators. First
prize, a fifth of Jack Daniels and second prize a six-pack of Pabst. We decided
you couldn't do it today!
Dario Carrara (BS '88, MS '93) is an engineer at Cabletron Systems. He
said that if he had known about last year's SPAC he would have attended.
Carl Oppenheimer (MS ' 85) dropped us a note pointing out that in last
year's Signals and Noise we erred and listed his degree as BS and not MS.
Sorry Carl, we should have caught that mistake. Carl thinks we should institute
a course in "unfair play" and group dynamics, ie., assign a project and change
the definition after it is done. Also, he thinks students need to be exposed to
documentation change control specification sheets, with which he has had a lot
of experience.
Gerry Jankauskas (BS ' 86, MS '90) was looking around the WWW and came
across the ECE home page and thought he would say hello. He recently took a
position at the US Robotics R&D laboratory in Westboro, MA. He is currently
heading a new hardware group and is on the architectural definition team for the
software. His facility is new this year and will be the development center for
high integration digital access products (T1, ISDN, modems, etc.), ATM, and LAN
switching/routing. If you are interested in US Robotics, Gerry said the WWW
address is http://www.mass-usr.com and for those in the Chicago area the WWW
address is http://www.usr.com. He would be glad to forward resumes if anyone is
interested in US Robotics. Thanks for the info Gerry!
Douglas Stanton (BS '81) returned the Alumni News and Information
sheet from last year's Signals and Noise with his business card attached.
He is Manager, Systems Compliance Test Automation Group for Allen-Bradley
Company, Inc., Mayfield Heights, OH.
Hugh Morris (BS '90) also found us on the WWW and asked us to up date
his e-mail address. He left a nice note saying that he moved to Portland OR and
started a consulting firm there, with the majority of his work with Intel. He
acquired his PE and left the consulting business, temporarily. He is now working
at the color printer division of Tektronix (November 1995) as an engineer in the
printed wire assembly manufacturing, circuit boards. He thinks it is a great
opportunity, working with a combination of hardware and software. Hugh's goal is
to have his own consulting firm in the future.
The ECE senior class along with a number of faculty members gather in
front of Morse Hall.
John Adan (MS '71) is a communications field engineer with the Hewlet
Packard Company. He writes that he will be starting his twentieth year as a
field engineer selling instrumentation. The last six years John has specialized
in communications test equipment which includes protocol analyzers for both LANs
and WANs, and bit error ratio testers. Recently he has been selling SONET and
ATM test equipment which is used in both networks and R&D.
John said, "The UNH ECE Department gave me excellent training in fundamentals
which was best for what I do now." He mentioned that in his line of work he
often hears about the UNH Interoperability Laboratory and it brings back fond
memories of UNH. He noticed that Don Melvin retired and said that his classes
were always challenging and memorable (so was Don Melvin).
Bob Colburn (BS '82) works at AEG Schneider Automation in North
Andover, MA. Bob sent along his e-mail address for our data base and looks
forward to receiving information from the Department.
Frank Field (BS '73) works at AT&T in Holmdel, NJ. Frank saw the
request for alumni addresses in last year's Signals and Noise and had his
addresses added along with many others.
Elaine Samson (BS ' 89) sent along her e-mail address and is looking
forward to exploring our department's home page on the WWW.
Jim Randall (BS '64) said he graduated from UNH in 1964, went to work
for IBM, and is still there.
Robert Cellupica (BS '71) is currently a area manager for a loop
technology planning group for NYNEX, Waltham, MA. Robert said, "Speaking of
technology planning, what a difference 24 years has made! Fortunately, my UNH
education leaft me well prepared to keep up with the changes."
David S. Zeckhausen (MS '84) sent along his e-mail address for our
data base.
Andy Nilssen (BS '79) sent along his e-mail address for our data
base.
Cheryl Mouradjian-Ryan (BS '86) sent along her e-mail address and
looks forward to hearing from the Department.
Kevin Bobier (BS '77) is working for Nova Engineering, a small
communications company in Cincinnati, OH. His company develops RF modems which
will be used in the information super highway. Kevin said to keep an eye on ADC
Telecommunication's, which is his company's primary contact, stock which will be
a direct reflection of his success.
Dr. Benjamin C. Kuo (BS '54) retired from the University of Illinois
in 1989 where he taught for many years. Dr. Kuo graduated with a BS from UNH in
1954 and obtained MS and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois at UC.
Dr. Kuo remembers Professors Melvin, Murdoch, Winn, Hraba, Blanchard, and
Nulson. Professors Melvin, Murdoch, Blanchard, Hraba, and Winn have retired.
Professor Nulson passed away in 1967. Professor Melvin has an office across from
the EE office in Kingsbury, Professor Murdoch is teaching part-time (his
lighting courses), Professor Winn works part-time in the Dean's Office, and
Professor Blanchard has retired to upstate NY.
Editors Note: Dr. Kuo is known nationally for his control systems textbooks.
