Memories...

George G. Chadwick (BS '55) sent in his current e-mail address. Thank you George.

Simon M. F. Healy, Jr. (BS '59) mailed in his completed alumni news and information form along with the correct answers to last year's Double-E Jumble. Simon retired in December 1989 after 30.5 years with Western Electric - Federal Systems Division, which became AT&T - Advanced Technologies Systems and now Lucent Technologies. Simon received his MSEE from NC State in 1992. Since retirement, Simon has worked part time as a consultant for his old organization, which is located in the Guilford Center in Greensboro NC.

Dennis McAlpine (BS '63, MS '68) sent is his e-mail for our department database. Thank you Dennis.

Bill Dalton (BS '66, MS '69), president of Datasonics, sent in a nice note from Cape Cod and his regards to everyone in our department. Marc Parent (BS '85, MS '87) has been promoted to Vice President and General Manager of Datasonics. John Baker (BS '93) and Paul Pietryka (BS '81) are both development engineers at Datasonics.

Richard Ross (BS '66) sent us his greetings from the Great Green North and the wonderful world of IBM Microelectronics. Richard has fond memories of Prof. Alden Winn and said that Alden has been a great influence on his pursuit of an EE career. Prof Winn taught his first (EE 1) and last (EE 814??) EE courses at UNH and also was his adviser. Richard said, "the revised EE curriculum looks like an excellent improvement. I would suggest that, given today's heavy dependence on microelectronics and emphasis on reliability, courses on Microelectronic Design/Fabrication and Reliability/Failure Mechanisms of Electronic Devices might be potential offerings of value to the studentÑthe first to undergraduates, the latter to graduate students." Richard sent in the correct answers to last year's Jumble puzzle. Congratulations for getting it correct!

Richard E. Tasker (BS '68) sent in his e-mail address for our database. Thank you Richard.

Dennis O'Brian (BS '75, MS '77) received his copy of "Signals and Noise" way out there in California. Californians still receive land mail, though e-mail is putting a dent in the pony express business. Dennis said, "Fil, I saw the article on your retirement. Congratulations on an outstanding career. I know it was outstanding because you actually had a positive impact on some of us (at least this engineer). I occasionally get a chance to dust off the digital signal processing tools you taught me and solve real problems. I never did properly thank you and all the faculty at UNH. Your contribution to my career and those of others is remembered."

Dennis continued by saying, "Things are going well here at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Even after 20 years it is still a very exciting place to work and a marvelous place to spend a career. (Please let me know if you have any hot PhD or MS students who need a challengeÑmore on recruiting later). Some things have changed since I grabbed my MS in '76 and ran to the West Coast. The beard and pony tail are long gone; kids are growing (I only had one back thenÑ3 now). My career has taken turns in R&D, program development and line management. All good and all enabled by the university education I received at UNH."

Dennis bumped into John Baker (BS '93). He's still having a lot of fun. He has also met with Don Meeker (MS '67). They have their own little UNH alumni association.

Dan Quinlan (BS '80) sent in his e-mail address and also Pat (Fallon) Quinlan's (BS '80) e-mail address. Dan asked if the e-mail addresses of alumni will be posted on our WWW site. For security reasons the alumni addresses will not be posted on our WWW site, but will be kept in our department database.

Paul M. Berard (BS '82) sent us his e-mail address. He also sent his regards to "Dr. John" Pokoski. He said that you can visit his web site at http://www.sonic.net/~p_berard. Thanks Paul for keeping in touch.

Gary A. Humes (BS '82) visited UNH on April 21, 1998. Garry is a Deputy Program Director for the US Navy's Submarine Combat Systems. He met with a number of undergraduate students to discuss employment opportunities in the US Navy's Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). Gary is stationed in Arlington, VA.

C. J. Clark (BS '86) currently is the president of Intellitech Corporation, which develops scan tools for design and test. He relocated in Durham, NH in October of 1996. He is the Chairman of the IEEE 1149.1 Working Group and has been working with Dr. Rucinski and ECE (and CS) students on a NH-IRC project. C. J. has given a number of guest lectures in Professor Rucinski's classes and has attended many of the Senior Project Day Poster Sessions at UNH.

Joe Dupont (BS '89) sent his greetings and an update from Ft Lewis, WA. He is with the US Army. Joe married Kit Dupont (Knight) from Yakima WA. He and his wife currently live in Dupont, WA (ironically enough). Joe left a job with the 29th Signal Battalion where he was responsible for networking a microwave communications system that covered approximately 3,200 square miles. It provided data and telecommunications to approximately 2,000 wire subscribers and mobile communications to approximately 850 subscribers. He started a job as the signal officer for an Engineer Group, responsible for all their tactical, strategic and data communications. He will also be responsible for managing their LAN. Joe was accepted into the US Army Acquisition Corps and will begin training next year (1998 we assume). He will be working three areas in the acquisition of future equipment to be used by the Army. The areas will be in R&D, testing, and production with future assignments as project manager.

Ken Wester (BS '92) stopped by the Department to deliver some surplus components and power supplies donated by Phoenix Controls Corporation, where he is currently working. Ken is living in Nashua, NH. He has many memories of working with Dick Jennings in the Technician's Office and was wondering how Dick is doing in Long Island. Thanks for the donation Ken.

Chris Young (BS '92) sent us a nice message last September (1997) and at that time was living in Boulder Creek, CA. He had read in Signals and Noise that Eric MacDonald sold his startup company to FORE. "That dirty dog," said Chris. He would like to have Eric's e-mail address to find out where he is now. He remarked that it's been a few years since the old days at RCC (IOL). Chris said, "You can tell Prof. Drake that the CLAM project (Contact-Free Laser Assisted Measurement) taught me what was probably the most important lesson in my college career: Always know who your customer is!"

Chad Lamb (MS '92) dropped us a message and let us know what's new in his life. Chad said, "he will defend his Ph.D. thesis on Dec. 1, 1997 (finally!), but in the interim, I start a new job at a telecommunications company in Redmond, WA." The company is called XKL, but don't spend too much time looking them up on the WWW, they are a startup. He started at XKL on October 20. He was married this summer, June 20, 1998. Chad met Suzette two years ago in Norman, Oklahoma while working on his Ph.D. He will be in New Hampshire for the wedding. He said, " things are busy right now, but I'm looking forward to defending, starting the new job, and getting married."

William W.Schmidt (BS '93) sent us a note on April 7, 1998 announcing that, "I'm a DAD!!! Benjamin William 4 lbs, 15 oz. and Bryce Vincent 3 lbs, 14 oz." Bill said it was an emergency c-section. Stacey and Bryce are doing great. Benjamin was flown to Tucson Medical Center. His lungs were pre-mature. Congratulations Bill! We all hope that Benjamin has a speedy recovery from his lung problem. Thanks for keeping us informed.

Nicole M McCormack (BS '97) sent a nice note from Texas. She hoped Frank and Adam both used and enjoyed their gift certificates to Barnstormers. She always liked that place. At the time of the note (October 1997) Nicole was applying to the University of Texas at Austin where she hopes to start working on a graduate degree. She will attend school part-time while working for Crystal Semiconductor where she is a LAN Product Test Engineer.

She said, "things are going fairly well here in Texas but I do miss being in school." She said to say hi to Adam, Helen, and everyone else.
