Social Happenings

The academic year started with a bang with the annual IEEE cookout on the back lawn of Kingsbury. The menu included hot dogs, hamburgers, and Sprite. Eric Lynskey and Mark Sinclair flipped while Kevin Meyer poured. Many rumbling stomachs were heard in the afternoon EE classes.

The first semester ended with the annual IEEE Christmas party at the Tin Palace. As usual, the festivities prepared everyone well for finals. Prof. Rucinski's student research team recently had a business dinner with engineers from their Fairchild sponsors at the exclusive Three Chimneys Inn in Durham. Daren Keller was even seen wearing a suit!

As this edition goes to press, Gordon Kraft is planning his annual graduation bash at his Madbury home. Clydesdales have already been seen grazing on his lawn. My sources say there will be seventeen different rock bands. Because of noise complaints from neighbors, and from as far as Young Drive in Durham, the Madbury police are taking special precautions this year. Kraft's entire property is being encapsulated in a gigantic plastic "cone of silence." In addition, two trainloads of mounted police are being shipped up from Boston to assist in crowd control.

ECE alumnus Matt Mello is hitting it big in the entertainment business. He is packing them in at Jake Ivory's, a Boston nightspot on Lansdowne Street. Matt is the entertainment director as well as a singer/pianist in the unique sing along rock'n'roll dueling pianos format, which he developed. The Boston Globe recently had a column documenting his success. If you are an UNH grad, stop by to say hi to Matt. This spring Matt and Paul Levesque brought their act to Johnson Theater for a fundraiser for the music department. Matt had a dual major at UNH, and he always said that he needed both music and EE to keep his sanity. Summer jobs in theater, on cruise ships, and even in a hotel in Shanghai, China got show-biz in his blood while at UNH, and he opted for that career. So study your circuits, and you may get to Vegas.
