SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS
by Biff Burns
It was a slow sporting year on the ECE front. There were no student-faculty
competitions. However, if any such activities had occurred, Biff can assure you
that the faculty would have thoroughly trounced the students. Moreover, if there
had been any contests between the ECE Dept. and any other, EE would have
triumphed.
In an unusual coincidence, three freshmen ECE students, Mike Boyd, Assane
Faye, and Austin Ganly were members of the varsity basketball team. The young
team had a poor win-loss record, resulting in the coach's resignation and the
transfer of several players. However, one player caught the attention of a local
sportswriter (Cory Nightingale, Foster's Daily Democrat) when he called team
members to inquire about their plans. Assane Faye replied, "If basketball was
the reason I picked UNH, I would think about transferring, because of all the
turmoil on the team. But it's not. I'm here to study. I decided a long time ago
there was no reason I wasn't going to stay." The comment was so refreshing to
Nightingale that he devoted an entire column to Faye and his attitude as a "true
student-athlete". Biff is pleased to see the proper relationship between
academics and athletics recognized by athlete as well as sportswriter.
Along the same lines, long-time head football coach Bill Bowes has retired.
In addition to his fine win-loss record, Coach Bowes was noted for his work
ethic, discipline, and interest in the character development of his individual
players. Biff has heard several stories in the past few days relating to Coach
Bowes' integrity and the respect which he engendered. He will be missed.
