UNH's Student Branch of the IEEE
by Jason Chan
The IEEE student branch completed a moderately successful year. Social
events, field trips, and a sponsorship in the IEEE Micromouse project were among
the most successful events accomplished during the year.
We held a number of social events including the fall and spring
picnics and a Christmas party at the Tin Palace. The Christmas party was by far
the most enjoyable event for students and faculty. It was an opportunity for
student members to talk with EE faculty about things other than EE, such as the
quirky things they did during their college years! You can also learn about
their fields of interest as well. On behalf of the branch, I want to thank Dan
Brogan, currently a senior, for sponsoring two field trips. The first trip was
to Melexis Microelectronic Integrated Systems in Concord, NH. Melexis is a
corporation that specializes in the fabrication of automobile grade integrated
circuits and sensors. The second trip took was to the MIT particle
accelerator.
The IEEE branch sponsored the IEEE Micromouse project. This project
was undertaken by Jim Szymczak and Karen Tuttle. Jim and Karen designed a
robotic "mouse" unit that sensed its way through a maze. Jim and Karen were
unable to get the robot fully operational; unfortunately they did not
participate in the Micromouse competition. This is a challenging project for two
people to undertake so give Jim and Karen a hand for giving the project their
best shot!
New officers were elected midsummer. The newly elected staff members
are President: Jason Chan, Vice President: Dan Brogan, Secretary: Jeff Lapak,
and Treasurer: Eric Burdette.
If you want to learn more about the UNH IEEE branch, contact one of
the officers or check out our webpage located on the ECE website. You'll often
find an IEEE staff member in Room 215, the IEEE lounge. Otherwise, drop by 215
and chat with other EE students!
