Fond Memories
by Carol French, Educational Assistant, CEPS Deans Office
Helen Melanson Lawson and I were friends and neighbors for many years before
we became colleagues in the College of Technology. In fact our children grew up
together. Once her children were all in school, I convinced Helen that she
needed to get back into the work force. I told her she could come into the
Dean’s Office to brush up on her typing skills before applying for a position.
In the Fall of 1975, Richard Davis, Dean of the College of Technology at the
time, asked who this woman was at the typewriter and proceeded to ask if she
wanted a position. She was hired on the spot. Helen started working in the
Mechanical Engineering Department in October 1975 in an hourly position at $2.60
an hour for 3 months. In January, 1976 she was given a full-time (10 month)
position in the Chemistry Department where she resided for 3 years. She resigned
this position to return to the Mechanical Engineering Department in July 1979
where she worked for eight years. Helen began her career in the Electrical and
Computer Engineering Department in June 1987 to present.
If one were to summarize Helen’s 25 years of service to the University
community, you could say she has been a very loyal and dedicated friend to many
people as well as her profession. I, for one, will miss her.
